JEDEC:
The first transistor standard in the US was used by RMA "Radio Manufacturer's Association", this was followed by RETMA "Radio Electronics & Television Manufactures Association" and later followed by EIA, “Electronic Industries Alliance”. The last one was a trade organisations with several associates like: CEAThe Consumer Electronics Association”; ECAThe Electronic Components, Assemblies, and Materials Association”; GEIAThe Government Electronics and Information Technology Association”; JEDECThe JEDEC Solid State Technology division” and the TIAThe Telecommunications Industry Association”.

JEDEC, The Joint Electron Devices Engineering Council was formed in 1958 as a part of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA). This US standard is introduced in the late fifties to come to standard of semiconductors used in the US. The code is simple <number> <N> <serial number> <Suffix Optional> . 1=Diode, 2=Transistor, 3=Dual-Gate, 4=Optocoupler (LED + photodiodes), 5=Optocoupler (LED + Transistor). Examples: 2N22 "Western Electric early fifties", 2N2222 "Texas Instruments end sixties". The suffix is optional and mean for A=low gain, B=medium gain and C=high gain. There are more standards, like the European Pro-Electron and JIS "Japanese Industrial Standard". This page is meaned for US types.
